How modern clocks work?
We all are familiar with term “clock”. In our daily life we use clock number of times to get know about time. But, have you ever wonder that how this clock works? How it shows us time? If you know already then you are such a smart person though. But if you do not know then, no worries we will see and learn how this clock named thing works.
First, let
we jump into the history of clock?
Who made
this?
There are
many clocks that were invented in past. Some of them are sundials, Greek water
clocks, candle clocks, hourglass etc. But here we are talking about modern
clocks.
Don’t know
how much it is true but it is said that the first modern clock was created by a
german inventor named “Peter Henlein” in 1511.
Now let’s
see how today’s clock works. Here I will talk about only modern clocks in which
quartz is used as main component. Many of us have seen quartz written on clocks
because quartz is main component in that clocks. In quartz clocks battery is
used as power source because quartz clocks consumes very less amount of
electricity.
I am continuously
repeating word “QUARTZ”. So what is quartz?
Quartz is a
crystal which is made up of SiO2. It shows the property of piezoelectricity,
which means whenever electric pulse is given to quartz it will start vibrating
with some particular frequency.
On the
basis of quartz let’s see how quartz clock works?
So when battery
is connected in a clock . It produce current in the circuit. This current i.e
electric pulse is transmitted to the quartz. It will start vibrate at it’s
particular frequency (32768 Hz). The frequency of quartz i.e 32768 Hz
converted into 1 Hz i.e One electric pulse with the help of T-flip flops. This resonance
further transmitted to a chip which moves the second hand of clock to one step
with the help of gears. This one step is called one second. This happens in a
second and every second.
So by this way quartz clock works. Sounds fascinating……yeah
Great
